Washington, D.C., Nov. 3, 2011 — The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the SHRM Foundation, and the Families and Work Institute (FWI) have been awarded a $1 million grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to make flexible workplaces more available to employers and employees.
The grant will allow SHRM and FWI, with the help of the SHRM Foundation, to educate HR leaders and professionals about the business case for workplace flexibility and to develop practical resources for HR professionals to use to implement flexibility. SHRM and FWI also will create resources that will help employees better use flexible work arrangements.
“By joining forces, SHRM and Families and Work Institute have the capacity and reach to make workplace flexibility the new normal of the American workplace,” says Kathleen Christensen, program director, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “This grant will bring together employees, employers, managers and HR professionals, all with the goal of ensuring concrete steps to take workplace flexibility from research to reality.”
Through the support of the Sloan Foundation, SHRM and FWI will work to make workplace flexibility a mainstream issue by bringing educational programming and training to all 50 states by 2014.
The funding will allow the organizations to produce tool kits and resources on workplace flexibility that will be shared with HR practitioners, employers and employees free of charge via the FWI-SHRM When Work Works website. The SHRM Foundation will produce a best practices DVD featuring an organization that has found business success in incorporating workplace flexibility into its culture and practices. The DVD will be distributed free to SHRM chapters across the country, HR thought leaders and business schools.
“This important funding from the Sloan Foundation will allow SHRM and FWI to develop new strategies to take the movement toward flexibility to a new level,” said Henry G. (Hank) Jackson, president and CEO of SHRM. “At SHRM, we are helping employers to understand the business case for flexible workplaces by informing both employers and employees about the many benefits of workplace flexibility.”
Said Ellen Galinsky, president of FWI: “One of the ways we will educate employers and employees about the many benefits of workplace flexibility is through an amazing array of real examples of flexible practices from hundreds of companies that are winners of the Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility — an important feature of the FWI-SHRM partnership.”
SHRM announced in February a partnership with FWI to help organizations be more successful by transforming the way businesses view and adopt flexible workplace practices. The partnership is hosting a work-life focus conference Nov. 8-10 in Washington, D.C., which will feature thought leaders in workplace flexibility and winners of the Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility.
