SILVERBERG: INITIATIVE AIMS TO PREPARE CHILDREN TO LEARN FOR A LIFETIME

The recent visit to Sarasota of the noted author and researcher Ellen Galinsky is serving as the kickoff for an initiative aimed at giving young children the tools they need to succeed in school and in life.

Coming under the umbrella of the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, with funding support from The Patterson Foundation, this effort is designed to bring together those who interact with young children, including parents, early childhood educators, health professionals, library staff and many others.

The goal is to improve outcomes for children, especially those from low-income households, with the benchmark of reading proficiently by the third grade. Research has shown that those whose reading skills are inadequate by that age face a far more difficult path ahead in school and in life.
